| Single Ladies, Mondays at 9 p.m. on VH1 |
Keisha and April arrive at an event. Here's where we get the introductions. Raquel (Denise Vasi) is a long-time-no-see girlfriend of Keisha's from Inglewood, who is engaged to a cardiologist. She introduces him to Keisha and April, but it isn't long before he excuses himself.
Through some quick exchanges we learn that she is actually the free-spirited artsy type,or at least she used to be. Raquel is marrying a rich doctor at the urging of her mother, who doesn't hesitate to belittle Keisha's single status and former life as a video girl.
So that explains Raquel, but what about where we left off last season with Val (supposedly only two weeks have passed). That's when Jerry shows up on the dance floor. April and Jerry Tango, while she explains Val's actions. Keisha cuts in. She too, tries to put in a good word for Val in her absence, but Jerry isn't moved. I mean his heart isn't, he's still dancing. But once he makes it clear that he's heart broken over Val, he and Keisha have a true DWTS moment and he spins her into the arms of Winston, the FBI agent (Rick Fox).
While her friends are spinning, dipping and doing the tango downstairs, Raquel goes upstairs to look for her fiance, the good doctor. And boy does he give her a lot to see. He's with another woman-in every sense of the word. Instead of acting like a reality wife, she cries quietly and collects herself before returning downstairs.
After the dance and discovery, Keisha spots Raquel, who is obviously upset. But there's no time to explain, because her fiancé needs her by his side to address their guests. When he turns over the mic to her, she surprises him and everyone else by telling that she saw him having a Marvin Gaye moment with another woman. Gasp! And what is a broken engagement without added drama? She doesn't intend to hand over the ring, she actually tosses it, but don't worry. Keisha grabs it mid-air, , "you earned this."
Anyway, Keisha has her own problems. She hasn't heard from Malcolm in two weeks and she's feeling the heat from the FBI. They are pressuring her to give him up, but she doesn't have a clue where he is. Seriously.
Once the ladies are at the boutique we find out where Val is. She's hiding out in Europe. Milan, to be exact. And while we're trying to figure out if that means there will be a Val replacement in the future, she sends an e-mail telling them she isn't coming back. She's selling her shop.
Meanwhile, Malcolm finally reaches out to Keisha. They meet and Keisha confronts him about why he's supporting his ex-wife. Malcolm tries to explain. It seems Mayor Howard had been extorting start up businesses. Since Malcolm and his ex had a business they were on the list of persons that could get the FBI closer to the mayor's dealings. Confused? Yeah, it's murky. But it's good enough for Keisha. That is, after Malcolm promises that he has no feelings for his ex.
The next time we see April, she's talking to Big Boi, not the guy from her fantasy, "the" Big Boi. She's booked him for a performance. But just as Keisha and Raquel are giving her a high five, Rick fox, I mean Winston, the FBI agent, comes in and drags Keisha out of the club like Captain Caveman. During the interrogation we find out she owes $200,000 in back taxes. She's facing 3-5 years if she doesn't pay.
Back at the club, April and Raquel reluctantly call the best lawyer they can think of to help Keisha. Enter Shawn Clarke-an old flame from Keisha's past. He urges her to give up Malcolm. But she makes it clear that she's one of those ride or die chicks. Girl, please.
So here's the back story. Keisha and Shawn were together for 6 years, but he cheated once and got someone pregnant. So he's angry at Keisha for throwing away 6 years over one night. And of course, the feeling is mutual.
By the end of the show, Raquel decides to reconnect with herself and dumps her fiancé for good. April realizes that she's not ready for a real relationship, she just wants to have fun. Keisha, still owes the IRS $200K. But that doesn't stop her from having a night on the town with her girlfriends.
Single ladies airs Monday nights at 9 p.m. on VH1. Did you see the Season Premiere of Single Ladies? Let us know what you think.

Just watched the premiere. I liked the show last season, flaws and all, but this premiere really sucked. A complete stinker all around. Horrible acting, writing, directing, and the story was not engaging at all. Time to take it off of my DVR...
ReplyDeleteI don't totally agree with Anonymous but I thought the premiere was choppy. Instead of seamless transitions I felt like my head bobbed from one scene to the next. LisaRaye has got to get her acting chops on point. She played forced. New Girl seems like she'll fit in. I'll give it a chance.
ReplyDeleteIt was not as exciting as I thought it was going to be. Maybe, the writers needed to lay the foundation for the rest of the season. I do want more Malcolm and Keisha. Glad he showed up to " bail" out the woman he claims to love. To be continued........ Can't help but want to see Val and Jerry make up, talk, fight but oh well. I will tune next week
ReplyDeleteI thought it was just me but the premiere did suck because the storyline was all over the place. I will give them another chance next week.
ReplyDeleteThe episode was awkward. It was supposed to have been 2 weeks later but the story line and actions didn't project that feel; Val leaving ATL for good, Kesha losing a layer, Aussie girl deported, April dumps Reed.... The premiere would have been better played on heavy decisions coming about after time lapse. It was disjointed, however I am still excited about the season.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was great! I don't see why people keep saying Denise Vasi couldn't act and Stacey Dash really sucked! Stacey Dash made the whole show revolve around her and I simply didn't care! This show is not meant for everyone to be Oscar Winning Actors! I think you all should give it a chance. Stacey Dash was being mean to everyone on set and well the show must go on and I think Denise Vasi stepping in was a phenomenal attribute! She fits in really well. I am glad to see Travis again! He is so funny! Anyways, Val is going to be missed but the show must go on. Plus this was only the first episode. So just give it a chance.
